Our Motto

Study, Learn, Succeed

  1. The school should provide a safe and orderly environment.

  2. There is a positive correlation between learning and school attendance.

  3. All students should be provided with a climate conducive to learning where they are exposed to positive experiences which promote positive attitudes.

  4. A variety of teaching strategies should be provided incorporating all learning styles that will allow all students to master skills.

  5. All students should be valued as individuals – addressing their academic, physical, social, and emotional needs.

  6. Student achievement should be monitored through various assessment tools that drive our educational decisions.

  7. A strong partnership between school, home, and the community - where open communication exists -  is critical to the educational success of every student.

  8. There should be collaboration and a shared decision-making process among all SLS stakeholders.

Our Mission

To provide the appropriate resources needed to ensure that all students are in a nurturing, learning environment that will enable them to learn and master the skills essential for becoming independent, capable learners in an ever changing society

Our Vision

That South Lawrence students will excel socially, emotionally, academically and physically in all areas

South Lawrence School was opened in the fall of 1985 when three local elementary schools were consolidated. Loretto Elementary, which had previously been consolidated with students from Liberty Grove Elementary and West Point Elementary, Saint Joseph Elementary, and Iron City Elementary. Construction was not complete at the beginning of the 1985-86 school year, so there were parts of the building that could not be used at first. Lunches were prepared at Loretto Elementary and brought over daily. Thirty-two teachers, twenty staff members, and a principal made up the staff of the new school located just south of Loretto High School. The school housed students in grades K-8 and competed in basketball. In May of 1986, South Lawrence was adopted by First Farmers and Merchants Bank and Loretto Casket Company as a part of the Adopt-A-School program. Today, South Lawrence is a PreK - 8 school with thirty-eight teachers, thirty-two staff members, and a principal and assistant principal. There are lots of opportunities for students including basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, football, cross country, volleyball, cheerleading, FCA, Jr Beta, and 4-H.
